Is It Worth Paying More for Custom Performance Uniforms? (An Honest Answer)
For coaches, program directors, and team managers who are tired of guessing.
You've probably been here before.
The season is coming up. Someone has to deal with uniforms.
That someone is you, and you already have seventeen other things on your plate.
So you start looking at options. There are cheap uniforms that ship fast. There are custom shops with slick websites. There are small shops that screen print. And there are prices that range so wildly you can't tell if you're being ripped off or getting a deal.
The question underneath all of it: Is it actually worth spending more?
Here's an honest answer.
The real cost of cheap uniforms
Inexpensive uniforms have one thing going for them: the upfront number looks good.
But coaches and program directors who've gone that route know what usually happens next:
Imprints peel and crack after a season of use, colors fade. Fit is generic, built for an average body, not an athlete.
When you need to add a new member mid-season or next season, you're back to square one with a new minimum order.
And the uniforms that looked decent in the product photo? They look like what they are (cheap) when your team lines up next to a program wearing something that was actually made for them.
The "cheaper" option often isn't, once you're replacing it.
What custom performance apparel actually costs, and why
Let's talk numbers, because almost nobody in this industry does, and that's frustrating.
At Podiumwear, fully custom uniforms typically range from around $35 for basic pieces up to $245 for elite-level competition uniforms, depending on the sport, the product type, and the performance tier you choose.
To make it concrete, here's how our tiers break down for one of our most popular cross-sport items: the warm-up jacket.
Warm-up jacket, example pricing. All tiers are fully custom

All tiers include free design revisions and no minimums on reorders. Initial orders start at $999.
Initial orders have a $999 minimum. For most programs, that's not a barrier. A team of 8 athletes at Bronze pricing gets there easily. And there's no minimum on reorders, so adding one athlete mid-season doesn't mean a new production run.
What you're actually paying for (and what you're not)
When you order custom kit, you're not just paying for fabric. You're paying for:
- A design that represents your program. Not a stock screen print someone else is also wearing.
- Fit built for athletic movement. Not a standard cut pulled off a shelf.
- Colors that are actually yours. Dye-sublimated into the fabric, not printed on top of it.
- A uniform that holds up through a full season of training, competing, and washing.
What you're not paying for at Podiumwear: extra charges for design revisions, a call center that doesn't know your order, or a surprise when the uniform shows up and doesn't look like what you approved.
Our process includes a 3D design proof before anything goes to production. You see exactly what you're getting. Want to see your colors printed before you approve? We can do that too.
So, is it worth it?
If your program cares about what they look like on the start line, in the gym or on the field, and you want a supplier who will actually pick up the phone and know your account: yes.
If you need this year's uniforms to last more than one season, and you don't want to repeat this process again in twelve months: yes.
If you've been burned before by an order that arrived wrong, or late, or just not what you expected, and you want a process with guardrails built in: yes.
The cost difference between cheap uniforms and custom performance kit is real. But so is the difference in what your team walks away with.
What to ask any supplier before you order
Whether you work with Podiumwear or someone else, these questions will tell you a lot:
- Can I see a 3D proof before production starts?
- How many design revisions are included?
- What's the reorder policy if I need to add athletes?
- Who do I call if something goes wrong, and will they know my account?
- What's your on-time delivery track record?
The answers tell you whether you're working with a partner or just placing an order.
