Gold, Bronze, or Silver MTB: Which Cycling Jersey Is Right for Your Team?
A straight answer for team managers choosing between road and trail.
The right jersey depends on what your team actually rides. A road racer training for a criterium needs a different jersey than a NICA rider bombing singletrack. Podiumwear builds for both: fitted Gold and Bronze jerseys for the road, and a relaxed, non-fitted Silver mountain bike line for the trail.
Here's how to tell which one your team needs.
The quick answer
| Gold (Road) | Bronze (Road) | Silver MTB | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit | Second-skin, race fit | Traditional fitted race cut | Relaxed, non-fitted, no pockets |
| Style | Fitted short sleeve | Fitted short sleeve | Short sleeve, choice of crew neck or V-neck |
| Best for | Elite/competitive road racing, high-mileage training | Club and recreational road riding | Trail riding, NICA and youth MTB leagues, casual off-road |
| Price | $135 | $79 | $49 |
If your riders are road racing or training hard on pavement, start with Gold or Bronze. If they're on dirt (especially a NICA or youth mountain bike team) the Silver MTB line is built for exactly that.
Gold: for the most serious road rider
Gold is designed to fit like a second skin, built for riders who don't want any extra fabric slowing them down. It uses two lightweight fabrics for higher wicking power, with a longer sleeve length, a silicone gripper at the lower back opening, kissing-welt zipper construction, and a two-piece collar for a closer fit around the neck.
Sizing tip: if a rider is between sizes, sizing up means a slightly longer fit; sizing down means slightly shorter. The fabric has some stretch, so there's flexibility in the circumference.
Bronze: durable, versatile, and built for comfort on the road
Bronze is the jersey for club rides, charity rides, and riders who want a relaxed, traditional American race fit on the road. The fabric is lightweight and breathable with solid wicking properties, soft tension elastic at the waist and pockets, and a durable full-length zipper.
Sizing tip: if a rider is between sizes and height isn't a factor, size up for a more relaxed club fit.
Silver MTB: built for the trail, not the peloton
Mountain biking calls for a completely different jersey than road riding, which is why the Silver line is cut differently on purpose. It's relaxed and non-fitted rather than second-skin, and it skips the jersey pockets road riders rely on, most MTB riders are already carrying a hydration pack or using frame bags, so pockets just add fabric you don't need on the trail.
The Silver Short Sleeve MTB Jersey ($49, men's R105 / women's R106) comes in your choice of crew neck or V-neck. Both are the same jersey, same fabric, same relaxed fit, same performance on the trail. Which neckline you pick is just down to team preference.
Two more pieces worth knowing about if you're outfitting a full MTB kit:
- Unisex Silver Long Sleeve Tech Tee ($68) — a long sleeve option for cooler days or extra coverage on the trail
- Child's MTB Jersey ($37) — sized for younger riders, a common need for NICA and youth league rosters
Sizing tip: since this is a relaxed, non-fitted cut by design, most riders should order their regular size rather than sizing down the way they might for a fitted road jersey.
A bonus piece, not a race jersey, but worth having
The Ripstock Fabric Crew Shirt ($79) often gets mistaken for another jersey option, but it's a different kind of garment entirely: a button-up, mechanic-style shirt in a rugged ripstop fabric. It's not built for racing — think of it as a coach's shirt or an après-ride shirt, something your coaching staff or riders throw on after they're off the bike. Worth adding to a team order, just not as an answer to "which jersey should I race in."
Why this matters for NICA and youth league teams specifically
If you're outfitting a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) team or another youth mountain bike league, the Silver line is built with that rider in mind: a forgiving, non-fitted fit that works across a wide range of body types on a growing roster, at a price point that makes it realistic to outfit an entire team, including younger riders.
Which one is right for your team?
Most programs aren't choosing just one. Mixed programs with both road and off-road riders often carry Gold or Bronze for their road squad and Silver for their mountain bike riders. A few questions to help you decide:
- Is your team riding road, trail, or both?
Road racing and training favor Gold or Bronze. Trail riding and NICA-style leagues call for Silver. - How competitive is the road side, if you have one?
Elite/high-mileage road riders get the most out of Gold. Recreational and club-level road riders are usually well served by Bronze. - Do your riders carry gear in jersey pockets, or use packs and frame bags?
If it's the latter, the pocket-free Silver cut won't be a trade-off — it's the better fit. - Are you outfitting a range of ages and body types, like a NICA roster?
Silver's relaxed, non-fitted cut is more forgiving across a wide range of riders than a fitted jersey. - Do you need a consistent team look across both road and MTB rosters, or are these separate squads with their own kit?
